The Tuscan territory possesses an archaeological heritage of the Middle Ages of great importance in part still to be discovered and enhanced. In fact, the Middle Ages occupy a vast space in the complex of the historical-archaeological resource of Tuscany: it has left an indelible mark on the current conformation of the settlement network and on one of the most celebrated landscapes of modern and contemporary culture, which it finds in the cities of Siena, in its countryside and in the Maremma one of the most significant expressions. In this landscape, the material remains of history have fossilized on the territory as archaeological areas, but also as monumental ruins or as a still vital fabric in the dynamic historical centers of the region. It is therefore necessary to find a new balance to make contemporary development compatible with the conservation of this resource through an optimization of cognitive interventions and through its intelligent and economical use. Urban nuclei, castles, open villages, monasteries and churches must therefore be analyzed and known in depth, in relation to their territorial and environmental context; and it is necessary that this widespread heritage is inserted in an organic policy of enhancement capable of integrating it into its landscape and making it compatible with current communication and use needs through the use of innovative information technologies. The project "Archeologia dei Paesaggi Medievali"Is divided into phases of research in the field and in the laboratory, and in the processing and communication of information; the aim is to optimize the conservation and use of that great cultural resource constituted by the widespread landscapes that have medieval ruins and monuments at their center.
