This volume deals with the geomorphological evolution of the northern sector of today's Venice lagoon and the complex delta system of the Piave River. Particular attention is dedicated to the description of the environmental changes that have occurred over the last two millennia and how the variations in lagoon and river hydrography interacted with human activity between the Roman age and the Middle Ages. The geoarchaeological framework presented shows, in transparency, the remarkable resilience of the settlement and economic exploitation systems that have operated over the centuries in these humid areas. Although subject to a continuous trend of rising relative sea levels and significant movements of river mouths, tidal channels and port inlets, the lagoon environment appears to have always remained "a human territory" and not a "peripheral wilderness" ”. There are many economic and political reasons that have pushed the communities of the upper Adriatic to live and prosper in the lagoons. Evidence remains of their ability to manage the notable adaptive challenges that the rapid environmental changes, typical of these contexts, were gradually posing to them. Contemporary societies are now preparing to face an accelerated rise in sea levels. This phenomenon is well known and linked to climate changes induced by the release of anthropogenic greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Faced with such a dramatic and pressing scenario, which will have a strong impact on lagoon and coastal systems, understanding how past communities lived on the surface of the water seems to be a useful exercise.
