The seminar was dedicated to the archeology of mining activities for lithic materials and minarals of different metals: iron, copper, lead and silver. During the first week of studies, held in the Certosa di Pontignano, the processes subsequent to extraction were mainly examined: refining, the preparation of semi-finished products, the marketing of artifacts. During the second week, the seminar moved to Rocca San Silvestro precisely to identify those structures on site, located both inside and outside the walls, which allowed the realization of the various metallurgical processes on minerals coming from the metaliferous area of Campiglia Marittima. The two areas, which represent a typical example of complementarity of the mining-metallurgical process, still highlight the basic structures of that activity that was able to determine the economic and social order of those populations throughout the Middle Ages. The presence of experts on the subject, coming from many regions of Europe, has allowed the comparison of various experiences in the field of mines and on archeometallurgy, highlighting certain highly innovative characters capable of defining research directions hitherto neglected by the scholars of our universities .
