The volume deals with artisanal production in Cisalpine Gaul, a subject not yet treated in a systematic way, that is, able to account for the multiplicity of these activities and their having often been interconnected in a highly integrated economy, divided into a myriad of companies . The issue is however very complex because it is obviously linked to the broader problem of the interpretation of the Roman economy as an autarchic system, or on the contrary a market system, with all the possible nuances between one and the other of these assumptions. Starting from a general reflection on the theme of craftsmanship in the economy of the empire, seen through the history of European studies, the texts present some syntheses on individual forms of craftsmanship present in the region and a research on indicators of craft production in the Cisalpina. The CD accompanying the volume contains the computerized archive of the survey cards.
