Technical Information
The Oltrepò Pavese in general, the Staffora Valley in particular, have enormous information potential as regards the layout of the territory in ancient times. However, an organic research program had never been prepared until today. The numerous archaeological interventions carried out in those lands were generally the result of the careful control of the territory by the Superintendency, mainly through emergency interventions, derived from building or agricultural works.
A single, albeit reduced precedent of planned investigation is represented by the excavation campaigns in loc. Casette di Campospinoso (PV), in the years 2005-2008, edited by the writer for the University of Pavia.
The interest in the area north of Rivanazzano Terme (PV) was suddenly sparked by a precious report from a resident, Pier Roberto Rosa, who in the summer of 2015 brought to our attention an evident sign of settlement in loc. Cascina Pizzone, in the Municipality of Rivanazzano Terme in fact. In agreement with the Superintendency, the University of Pavia conducted a survey, the results of which confirmed the existence of a conspicuous archaeological deposit probably attributable to a Roman rustic villa.
When the owner failed to permit an invasive archaeological investigation, attention shifted to the nearby Cascina Boarezza estate, where - thanks again to Pier Roberto Rosa - we met the full availability of the Alpeggiani family, owner of the fund, towards one of our archaeological excavation activities.
Thus, between 2016 and 2020, it was possible to conduct six excavation campaigns in continuum, the results of which, partially presented in other locations, are discussed here and compared with other similar neighboring realities.
In the meantime, starting from 2017, an investigation was launched at Cascina Isola Felice, stimulated by the owner Giacomo Fiori, who drew our attention to significant outcrops of ancient building materials. The preliminary news of this excavation, which is presented here, is intended only to show the many potentialities of the deposits identified in that property.
