Description

The Euganean Hills and the surrounding plain are a key territory that is not reduced to local values and meanings, but has been placed, at least since the end of the Bronze Age, in one of the most vital hubs of relations between East and West. Throughout the Early Middle Ages, especially in the lowland areas around the Adige, a battle of resilience took place in the face of environmental changes that moved the main route of the river southwards which, between protohistory and Roman times, touched Montagnana, Este and Monselice to then flow into the sea not far from Brondolo. The evolution of this territory revolves around three main problems: the sequence of the hydrographic system of the Adige and the canalizations built to keep these centers in communication with Verona and the lagoon; the boundaries of the territory of Este in relation to the Roman agricultural divisions; the transformations of crops and uncultivated land in the Middle Ages. The studies published in this volume analyze, in the perspective of a systemic research, the historical landscape using written sources, historical cartography and images from above, in particular the LiDAR.
