The volume examines a series of archaeological interventions, hitherto unpublished, carried out over more than a decade (2000-2013) during the works aimed at the redevelopment of the historic center of Ferrara.
In this area, in which the power palaces of the Este seigniory were concentrated, the investigations concerned in particular the vast area of Piazza Municipale, the former Bazzi building and the Garden of the Duchesses, on which the Palazzo di Corte Vecchia and the Palazzo Ducale with the attached gardens; corso Martiri della Libertà, where the Loggia Grande and the Estense Castle were located, inside which it was possible to find the Hanging Garden, of which only scant information was possessed, wanted by Eleonora d'Aragona wife of Ercole I; via Coperta, of which the various construction phases have come to light, as well as Alfonso I's Alabaster Room; finally, the terminal part of Corso Martiri della Libertà which made it possible to discover the structures relating to the Porta dei Leoni, located along the northern circuit of the medieval walls and closely connected to the Estense Castle.
The researches, mainly focused on the period of the Duchy of Ercole I (1471-1505), made use of numerous historical and documentary sources; the discovery of throats rich in ceramics, glass, metals and meal remains completed the study of the material culture of the period. Particular attention was also paid to the reconstruction of the botanical aspect of the Garden of the Duchesses.
