Description

Rightly considered as one of the most important legacies of the Middle Ages, castles are increasingly the subject of investigations which, conducted by scholars belonging to various disciplinary fields, benefit from the fundamental contribution of medieval archeology. An exemplary case in this sense is constituted by the castle of Carbonana, which, analyzed from the material, documentary and historical-artistic point of view, proved to be a surprising meeting place between macro and micro history. Recently restored, and therefore even better visible along the valley road that for centuries has connected Gubbio to Umbertide, the Carbonane castrum already appeared in 1192 in the privilege with which Celestino III confirmed to Bishop Bentivoglio the possession of some nested sites placed as a garrison of the Gubbio territory . With the decline of the episcopal lordship, two important city lineages took turns: the Gabrielli of the Frontone branch and the Porcelli, of Florentine origin. And it was the latter who inextricably linked the family onomastics to the castle that had consecrated its social rise, thus becoming, over the centuries, the Counts of Carbonana.
