In 1993, the discovery between the Vinarola and Aleotti streets of a reclaimed moat from the late Middle Ages enriched the urban history of Argenta with a fact that fills a gap of information on the period from the early Middle Ages to the modern written documentation.
The moat was voluntarily buried in a fairly short chronological period. After an initial deposit of bricks, peat and river sand, large poles interspersed with fences were set and finally all possible waste was thrown into it: fragmented crockery, household or personal items, remains of meals and wooden objects. The richness of the rediscovered context underlines how the medieval Argentan economy was open to commercial exchanges thanks to the presence of the Po di Primaro which at the time had a course that coincided with the current course of the Reno. The botanical, zoological and palynological analyzes also made it possible to to reconstruct for the first time a detailed picture of the environment and economic life of Argenta at the end of the XNUMXth century. The excavation also returned an extraordinary testimony regarding the topography of the center in the Middle Ages, of which very little was known. The portion of the moat brought to light is in fact most likely pertinent to the one that delimited the urban nucleus of Argenta which already during the XNUMXth century had been coagulating around the church of San Nicolò, corresponding to the current city center.
