It is with great pleasure that the School series welcomes, in its third volume, a miscellany of writings which is in fact a festschrift, a collection of essays in honor of Giulio Mondini, for several years Deputy Director of the institution alongside Vera Comoli, then Deputy Director at the time of his sudden and tragic death, and then Director. Always at the side of the School, to whose prestige he also contributed with the ownership of the UNESCO Chair New paradigms and instruments for the management of Bio-Cultural Landscape, he remains, with his magisterium, a point of reference for our Institution and it is therefore with gratitude that colleagues, friends, collaborators, specialists and doctoral students, all together, dedicate these pages of studies to him, largely with a direct link to his writings or common work experiences.
Despite the apparent heterogeneity of the contributions, a common thread stands out among them, represented by the heritage, on the most varied scales, treated with two prevailing guidelines, made explicit by the same two sections of the volume: on the one hand history and mise en valeur and on the other evaluation, but without this division being anything more than a convenient structure, given the constant interweaving and recall of themes.
Therefore, beyond the miscellany, it is truly possible to recognize an element of continuity and homogeneity that links these studies: it is the reference - sometimes explicit, sometimes implied - to the value (in its broadest and highest sense) of heritage. Between history, memory, protection, evaluation and expedients for valorisation, Heritage appears at times grandiose, in other contexts more underlying, always in the limelight, in the awareness that it represents our first wealth.
