Description
The figure of Tiberius, dominated by his predecessor and marked by a strongly adverse ancient historiography, has obtained little luck in archaeological and literary studies. The Milanese interdisciplinary project Around Tiberio. Archeology, culture and literature of the prince and his era, of which this volume constitutes the inaugural stage, represents an attempt, undertaken in conjunction with the resumption of excavations at the villa della Grotta in Sperlonga, to wrest Tiberius and his era from this shadowy existence in the critical landscape.
The volume is divided into two sections (Portraits and Contexts) respectively focused on the cultural identikit of the princeps and on some aspects of his era (characters, places, historical perspectives, genres and literary themes); in both sections, historical and archaeological essays alternate with more purely literary contributions. Through an updated rereading of the literary sources and a new examination of the archaeological data, the studies published here intend to offer, as a whole, an interdisciplinary contribution to the resumption of research on culture of the Tiberian age.
