The volume collects the Proceedings of the congress "The glazed ceramics of Central-Southern Italy: balances and updates" held on 6 and 7 May 1999 in Rome, at the National Research Council. The congress saw the active participation of Italian and foreign specialists and highlighted a complex panorama, which highlights how glazed ceramic includes a very wide and varied series of productions, active from the eleventh century onwards, largely still little known.
In particular, the Congress dealt with the problems relating to ceramics with decoration painted in green and brown, rarely even in red, expressly excluding graffitied ceramics; only marginally he also considered monochrome ceramics.
The crucial significance of the transition between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries came to the fore, when two new technologies suddenly and simultaneously arrived in Italy, that of engobed ceramic with lead coating and that of tin-coated ceramic. It clearly emerges that lead-coated products appear to be more widely consumed and cheaper than those with tin enamel. They were, therefore, a rather popular product, which therefore has considerable significance for the understanding of the socio-economic context.
