Description

At the end of the 80s the meritorious Società Archeologica Veneta had promoted, under the direction of Gian Pietro Brogiolo, excavation campaigns first in the castle of San Martino della Vaneza in Cervarese Santa Croce (1987), then on the Rocca di Monselice from 1988 to 1996, both financed by the Cassa di Risparmio di Padova and Rovigo.
The history of this town in the Euganean Hills is that of an important strategic center in the north-east of the Peninsula which, after its conquest by Agilulfo at the beginning of the XNUMXth century and the administrative downgrading of Padua and Este, was the capital of a district bordering the powerful duchies of Verona and Vicenza and the territories of the empire. An attempt was made to combine the traditional data offered by written sources, cartography and archaeological excavations with new lines of research based on GIS analyzes (both for the city and for the territory), remote sensing (mainly LiDAR) in a systemic vision of the history of a territory in which agricultural, uncultivated landscapes, architecture (fortifications, residences and churches) constitute the still preserved elements of our past.
