Description

The relationship of the Etruscan city with the political territory of competence is a subject of study full of questions, which range from the still approximate topographical knowledge of the urban fabric and necropolises to the often complex organization of the fabric of the countryside and rural necropolises. The volume collects the main works - introduced by a valuable update - that the author has dedicated, over time, to the identification of the boundaries between the city, the suburban areas and the countryside, and to their interaction in the form of a border . The poleography of Populonia, of Fiesole with the middle Valdarno, of Vulci with the Albegna Valley, of Cortona with its territory and finally of Cerveteri with internal southern Etruria, is investigated thanks to the contribution of historical and epigraphic sources, always associated with archaeological indicators of various kinds (topographic position of the mound tombs, characteristics of the architecture and funerary ritual, position and function of places of worship, distribution of particular forms of domestic ceramics, circulation of ceramic productions and survival of toponymic relics of pre-Roman origin), making use of models inspired by procedural archeology and economic geography. The aim is the reconstruction of the Etruscan territorial state and the recognition of the border landscapes organized based on the arrangement of sanctuaries and chapels to protect the countryside and the communities that lived there.
