Description

The author collects in this volume the studies conducted on the huge corpus of ceramics deposited in Pisa in the Museum of S. Matteo. These are 'basins' of Islamic production attributable to the secc. X-XV - recovered from the facades of many medieval city churches - and numerous ceramic finds of local production, mostly coming from kiln discharges and which pertain to a time span between the XIII and the XVI century. It was precisely of these materials that Berti was able to present a complete report by proceeding with their classification by shapes and decorations and also managing to identify, within the city, the location of the potters' workshops and their work organization: in short, the organic panorama and details of the production phenomenon of Pisan 'archaic majolica', whose most characteristic models have been described and reported in these pages with numerous reproductions in black / white and colors. The volume is enriched by an Appendix by Catia Renzi Rizzo in which it presents a historical-linguistic survey on the denominations of the artefacts in Pisa in the VIII-XVII centuries.
