Description

With cards by Margherita Bolla, Roberto Bugini, Marina De Marchi, Elisabetta Roffia.

The volume deals with an early medieval site in Sirmione, collecting and evaluating as much information as possible from historical and archaeological sources. Indeed Sirmione, famous for Catullus and his grandiose Roman villa, is also of considerable importance for its early medieval history. The starting point is the monumental testimony of the church of S. Salvatore, whose excavations have provided materials of extreme scientific interest. Equally important are the finds from the Lombard necropolis, which open up new perspectives for analysis on the historical evolution of the settlement. And finally the findings of important architectural elements, starting with the famous arch of a ciborium with the inscription of Desiderio and Adelchi. This study accounts for all these testimonies by framing them with analytical rigor and attention to detail in the general framework of the historical development of the settlement.
