Description

11 June 2022 – Pisa, Sala delle Baleari

"Stories (of) Ceramics" is a study day dedicated to the memory of Graziella Berti, a ceramics scholar and important figure for historical studies on medieval and modern Pisa, who passed away on 11 June 2013.
This occasion, now in its ninth edition, aims to remember her in the way that she herself would have appreciated most: through the themes dear to her, research innovation and the new generations of scholars.
The ninth edition, held nine years after the scholar's death on 11 June 2022 at the Sala delle Baleari of the Municipality of Pisa, and broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, was dedicated to the "Engobed Ceramics" of the medieval and modern ages .
The investigations on engobed ceramics, especially those of Pisan production of the modern age, have fascinated Graziella Berti since the first researches, and have captured her attention until the last period of her life. The analysis to reconstruct the dating, the production techniques, the technological transmissions, the circulation and use, the social and economic impact: the attention of the scholar, who accompanied the research on the data, focused on these topics materials with that on written sources.
In this perspective, therefore, the contributions included in this volume offer a contextual view of the engobed ceramics of the medieval and modern age of the Italian and Mediterranean areas, framing them in the society and economy of their time, in order to obtain useful information for reconstructing their chronology, production, circulation, uses and consumption, also with the help of written and iconographic sources and experimental archeology.
