Description

In this volume, the results of the first phase of an archaeological research work are published as part of a much more ambitious project: the knowledge of human settlements in rural areas in the upper Ferrara area. A research without chronological prejudices but, perhaps, more attentive to the centuries between the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages when, under the pressure of the 'barbarians', a network of Castrensian settlements had to be prepared to defend the Exarchate; in the same period, according to the legend, the civitas of Ansalaregina, whose name derives from that of the wife of the Lombard king Desiderio. The project took shape on two fronts: 1. geomorphological examination of the territory; 2. study of historical and archaeological sources for the definition of the probable phases of population; 3. identification of a sample area on which to experiment the methods of surface archeology already adopted in other areas of the region.
